This project centred on exploring how Aromatherapy Associates, a leading brand in the beauty and wellness sector, could innovate its consumer engagement in an increasingly digital landscape. Scent, being a vital element of their products, posed unique challenges for digital interaction, requiring creative solutions to replicate and convey its emotional and sensory impact. By integrating primary and secondary research, the project examined consumer trends, digital engagement strategies, and brand-specific opportunities to propose a forward-thinking solution.

A design-thinking framework was used to tackle this challenge, encompassing stages like inception, ideation, and iteration. A collaborative effort with FIT students brought together diverse perspectives and skills to brainstorm and refine ideas. Research methods included competitor analysis, trend mapping, and iterative testing of concepts.
Creative exercises such as mind mapping and brainstorming helped unlock innovative solutions. Incorporating feedback from peers and industry professionals allowed for the dynamic refinement of ideas, ensuring alignment with the brand's ethos and consumer expectations.

The wellness industry has witnessed significant growth, with consumers increasingly valuing fitness, mental health, and sustainability. However, digitising the experience of scent presents inherent challenges. Research highlighted consumer desires for authenticity, emotional connection, and education, which align with Aromatherapy Associates’ core values. This context revealed opportunities to develop platforms that combine sensory engagement with educational content, fostering deeper brand connections.

This included interactive tools allowing users to visualise the effects of different essential oils, guided relaxation exercises, and an educational platform on the science of scent. The innovation extended to exploring how scent could be embedded into immersive digital formats, such as augmented reality (AR), enhancing user engagement.
